Candida albicans yeast cells (scanning electron micrograph)
Candida albicans is a yeast fungus commonly found in many humans with no ill effects. Sometimes a course of antibiotics or a weakened immune system can allow its growth to accelerate, resulting in oral or vaginal thrush, or nappy rash. This excessive growth triggers a change in Candida albicans: the normally single-celled fungus becomes multicellular and resistant to antifungal and antibiotic treatments. This image shows Candida albicans present in the urine sample of someone with a urinary tract infection.
